Firstly, water is an essential element for human life, naturally generating global interest and widespread concern for anything related to it. Secondly, the water market moves substantial economic capital, from bottled mineral water to domestic treatment plants, creating strong commercial incentives for aggressive and sometimes misleading marketing practices.

The speed of information dissemination through social media has exponentially amplified this phenomenon. Today, fake news can reach millions of people in a few hours, often before experts have time to verify its reliability and provide refutations based on scientific evidence.

The misleading marketing of mineral waters

The bottled water advertising world presents numerous examples of misleading communication that fuel fake news about water. Catchy slogans such as “The water that eliminates water”, “It helps you feel young” or “Waters of health” suggest specific miraculous properties for certain brands, when in reality many advertised benefits are characteristics common to any good quality drinking water.

Particularly misleading is the tendency to emphasise the “diuretic power” of some mineral waters. This characteristic is not exclusive to specific brands, but represents a physiological property of water in general: any water suitable for human consumption, taken in the right quantities, naturally promotes hydration, thermoregulation and diuresis.

False beliefs about dissolved minerals

Another category of fake news about water concerns the minerals present in it. Sodium, for example, is often demonised through advertising campaigns that emphasise its absence or reduced concentration, also using specific units of measurement to make the values appear lower. However, sodium is an essential element for the proper functioning of the body, and the amount absorbed through water is generally negligible compared to that derived from food.

Similarly, calcium and magnesium, which determine the “hardness” of water, are incorrectly associated with the onset of kidney stones. Scientific research has never demonstrated direct correlations between the consumption of water rich in these minerals and the formation of stones. On the contrary, these elements perform vital functions for bone and cardiovascular health.

The alkaline diet illusion

Among the most widespread but scientifically groundless fake news about water is that of the alkaline diet, according to which the consumption of alkaline foods and drinks would alter blood pH, conferring greater resistance to diseases and infections. This theory completely ignores the physiological mechanisms of blood pH regulation: the body's buffering system, coordinated by the respiratory and urinary systems, constantly maintains blood pH around 7.4, regardless of diet.

The Water ionisers, "expensive devices that promise to produce alkaline water with beneficial properties commercially exploit this false belief. These appliances subject tap water to filtration and electrolysis processes, separating acidic and basic streams, but there is no scientific evidence to demonstrate health benefits from consuming water treated in this way.".

Innovative technologies without scientific basis

The market continually offers new technologies presented as revolutionary. Water enriched with molecular hydrogen, also marketed as “diatomaceous water”, It is proposed as a solution to increase antioxidant levels and reduce oxidative stress. However, the very low concentrations of hydrogen that can be achieved (around 1 mg/L) have no scientific evidence of benefits for the human body.

Similarly, the oxygen-enriched waters they promise improvements in physical and mental performance. A simple calculation shows the inconsistency of such claims: even drinking 2.5 litres of enriched water a day, the oxygen intake would be around 7,000 times lower than that obtained naturally through breathing.

The Wild West of Vitalizers

Particularly concerning is the sector of “unconventional” water treatment technologies, which represents one of the most fertile grounds for fake news about water. This includes the so-called vitalisers or water “information” systems. These devices claim to imbue ordinary water with special properties through processes that have never been scientifically proven, misusing physical terminology such as “energy,” “field,” and “resonance.”.

The theoretical principles underlying these technologies, such as Masaru Emoto's “positive resonance” or Jacques Benveniste's theorised “memory of water”, have been repeatedly disproven by the scientific community. Despite this, they continue to be exploited commercially to justify the sale of products that are expensive and have no effectiveness.

Fraud and unfair commercial practices

Some business practices reach the level of outright fraud. The Electrolysis test, used to discredit tap water by comparing it with osmotic, is a prime example. The coloured precipitate that forms during the test does not come from pollutants present in tap water, but from the corrosion of the iron electrode, a phenomenon that does not occur with osmotised water due to its low electrical conductivity.

Recently, even more dubious practices have emerged, such as the sale of water treatment systems passed off as medical devices, with false promises of tax relief under the 80% scheme. Such equipment is subject to specific regulations and cannot be marketed as medical devices.

Defence strategies against disinformation

Protection against fake news about water requires a methodical and critical approach. The first step is to always verify the sources of information, favouring peer-reviewed scientific publications and official communications from recognised bodies. It is important to be wary of of extraordinary claims that are not supported by solid scientific evidence and of products that promise miraculous benefits without providing adequate technical documentation.

Consulting qualified experts and requesting concrete evidence are fundamental tools for distinguishing between scientifically sound information and deceptive marketing operations.
