Our Legacy. Our Future'.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlights a simple truth: without sustainable use of water <\/span><b>there is no fertile soil or prosperous future<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each system connected to the water mains reduces waste, eliminates disposable bottles and lowers CO\u2082 emissions, turning a seemingly trivial gesture - drinking - into a concrete act of environmental protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>World Day to Combat Desertification: why it stems from a water deficit\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La <\/span><b>desertification is the irreversible degradation of soil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in arid and semi-arid areas due to erratic precipitation, rising temperatures, overexploitation of groundwater and unsustainable agricultural practices. It already affects 40 % of dry land (UNCCD, 2024). When moisture drops, soil loses organic matter, becomes compacted, can no longer absorb rainwater, and becomes vulnerable to erosion and pulverisation. The result is a vicious cycle that generates food insecurity, resource conflicts and environmental migration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A healthy soil is a water bank<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Day to Combat Desertification reminds us that The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/countryprofiles\/news-archive\/detail-news\/en\/c\/1729967\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95 % of the world's food depends on soil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but a living soil is also a 'diffuse reservoir': a single percentage point of extra organic matter can retain considerable volumes of water (FAO, 2023). Regenerating the land means strengthening the natural capacity to store water, mitigating flash floods, prolonged droughts and, ultimately, the resulting social and health costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The water footprint of our consumption is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1 kg of cotton requires approximately 10 000 l of water (Water Footprint Network, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1 kg of beef absorbs over 15 000 l (Water Footprint Network, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In Italy, 42 % of drinking water is lost in the network (ISTAT, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we do not reduce waste, global demand will exceed supply by about 40 % by 2030 (UN-Water, 2021). Optimising the final supply - with public fountains and grid-connected distributors - is therefore a decisive lever that complements agricultural and industrial interventions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Young people, green jobs and hydro-intelligent opportunities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than one billion under-25s live in vulnerable rural regions (UN DESA, 2024). Techniques such as precision irrigation, rain harvesting and wastewater reuse reduce water consumption by up to 60 % and <\/span><b>create new business opportunities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UNCCD Global Mechanism, 2023). When water is managed with foresight, it generates employment, keeps young people in the territories and strengthens the resilience of communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7125 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/drinkatering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Giornata-mondiale-contro-desertificazione-e-siccita.jpg\" alt=\"World Day against Desertification and Drought\" width=\"650\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drinkatering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Giornata-mondiale-contro-desertificazione-e-siccita.jpg 650w, https:\/\/drinkatering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Giornata-mondiale-contro-desertificazione-e-siccita-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/drinkatering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Giornata-mondiale-contro-desertificazione-e-siccita-600x415.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Towards neutrality of soil degradation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cLand Degradation Neutrality\u201d\u00a0<\/em>is another term linked to the World Day against Desertification, and it means achieving a zero balance between land lost and land restored. Water is the precondition for this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rainfall harvesting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with cisterns, hill basins and rain gardens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drip irrigation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supported by humidity sensors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Groundwater management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with emunition limits and progressive tariffs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Resilient crops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and less water-demanding (millet, sorghum, pulses).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reforestation, mulching and biocha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r to reduce evaporation (IPCC, 2022).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These integrated actions make the soil capable again of absorbing and returning water, closing the cycle that keeps it alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Finance for land and water: a discussion element on Desertification and Drought Day\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the UNCCD <\/span><b>about a billion dollars a day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between now and 2030 to restore soils and strengthen water resilience (UNCCD, 2023). A goal only possible with alliances between institutions, businesses and citizens, innovative financial instruments and a regulatory framework that rewards those who invest in regeneration and sustainable water management.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Circular economy of water: an accelerator of change<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cblue circular economy\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ovvero l\u2019economia circolare legata a questo elemento primario, punta a <\/span><b>risparmiare acqua seguendo i principi dell\u2019economia circolare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Questo approccio include diverse pratiche: recuperare il calore dai refrigeratori per usarlo nuovamente, riutilizzare l\u2019acqua impiegata nei processi industriali, progettare imballaggi che possano essere utilizzati pi\u00f9 volte, e alimentare gli impianti con energie rinnovabili come il solare o l\u2019eolico. Queste azioni congiunte permettono di ridurre in modo significativo il consumo di acqua ed energia, allo stesso tempo abbassando le emissioni di gas serra.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What we can do every day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individual choices, multiplied by millions, <\/span><b>create collective impacts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to avoiding food waste, favouring local, seasonal foods, moderating beef consumption, choosing textiles with a low water footprint and installing flow reducers in taps, we can affect the way we drink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adopting mains-connected dispensers - at home, in the office or at school - eliminates the need for disposable bottles, reduces waste, cuts transport emissions and minimises the 'hidden' water used to produce plastic and move it. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drinkatering.com\/en\/water-dispenser-office-purification-filtration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Water Houses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extend these benefits to the urban scale: they offer quality water for pennies, educate on sustainability and enable municipalities to <\/span><b>reduce waste management costs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
